“How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular” Viking Training

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see a real Dragon? To feel the heat from its scorching breathe or hear the “Poof” from their horrible gas? ( Oops) This morning we had the opportunity to do just that when we packed up the car and drove to The United Center in Chicago (Home of the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks) to experience “How to Train your Dragon Live Spectacular”.
Based on the animated Dreamworks movie, How To Train Your Dragon! The show brings 23 “real life” flying dragons with 40 foot wing spans and who breathe real fire to life. As I drove the expressway to get there I became more intrigued with how they would possibly pull all of it off.   Walking in we were greeted by a sea of miniature vikings all anxious to hear about the high flying adventures and to catch a glimpse of the amazing Dragons!

The boys strapped on their Viking helmets and we took our seats!!

The lights dimmed and we began to hear the story of Hiccup ( A Viking Teenager) and his best friend Toothless ( A Night Fury Dragon) , how they met and changed the way Vikings looked at their world completely! We were stunned with by all the amazing animatronics, they are all so lifelike and you could easily tell that each Dragon had their own personality.  The story behind this show was of true friendship and love. But the visual excellence of the Fire Breathing and High flying Dragons alone is reason to pack up the kiddos and not miss this event.

Some fun facts about the tour…

  • There are 23 dragons used, and 12 different species represented
  • It took 4 years to produce the production and tour
  • It has the largest number of animatronics ever to tour the globe
  • The Red Death Dragon is the largest animatronic ever built by Creature Technology Company at over 40 feet high and 60 feet wide.

By the end of the show it was almost hard to believe that the Dragons weren’t real, and I wanted so badly to ride one ( I need more Viking training or so I’m told). Thinking that no one would notice the boys asked if we could stay for the next show time.. Silly boys!!  For Matt and his friend ( being 9 ) this was an amazing experience that I am happy I was able to join them in. Some younger kids may be scared by the realistic Dragons, Fire and loud noises. But I honestly think that had I brought Kenna with as well ( who is 3) she would’ve enjoyed it also.
